Every business that runs on inventory, capacity, demand, cash, energy, or risk runs on an implicit forecast. Most of those forecasts are still produced by a spreadsheet, a planner's judgement, and a scheduled reconciliation that nobody enjoys. Time-series and predictive modelling, done properly, replaces the implicit forecast with an explicit one — trained on the organisation's own history, calibrated to its own decisions, and delivered with a measured uncertainty band rather than a single false-confidence number. Entiovi's Mintaka practice engineers these systems for the workloads where being wrong has a cost — inventory turns, working capital, service-level agreements, grid stability, fraud loss, and revenue recognition.

Where time-series & predictive
modelling wins.

Most enterprise planning rituals are forecasting rituals in disguise. Demand planning, capacity planning, cash forecasting, workforce scheduling, inventory replenishment, price optimisation, maintenance scheduling, fraud scoring, credit risk, churn propensity — every one of them turns on the same core question: what will the next interval look like, and how confident should we be? A good time-series system does not replace the planner. It moves the planner from producing the forecast to judging the forecast — which is the higher-value task in any planning function.

The payoff shows up in the places where small percentage improvements compound into real money. A one-point reduction in forecast error on a large SKU portfolio moves millions of dollars of working capital. A half-day improvement in anomaly-detection lead time prevents an outage that would have cost a day of revenue. A better-calibrated probability distribution on fraud outcomes changes which cases the investigators touch first, and the annualised loss curve with them. None of this is speculative. These are Mintaka deployments.

The question is not whether a time-series model can be built. The question is whether the decision downstream of the model is better because of it. Those are different projects.

Model families
we work with.

Forecasting is a mature discipline with a deep bench of model families. Mintaka selects for the shape of the data, the cost of error, the interpretability requirement, and the operational envelope — not for whichever architecture is trending.

Classical statistical models

ARIMA, ETS, state-space models, Holt-Winters, Theta — fast, interpretable, and frequently the right answer for univariate series with clear seasonality. Mintaka does not skip these in favour of a deep network when the simpler model is defensible.

Gradient-boosted machines

LightGBM, XGBoost, CatBoost — the workhorses of cross-sectional predictive modelling and, with lag-and-window feature engineering, highly competitive on hierarchical time-series problems.

Deep sequential models

LSTM, GRU, Temporal Convolutional Networks, and Transformer-based sequence models — where long-range dependencies, exogenous signals, or multi-variate structure carry the information.

Time-series foundation models

TimesFM, Chronos, Lag-Llama, Moirai, and related zero-shot and fine-tuned foundation models — increasingly viable for portfolios where per-series tuning is impractical and a shared representation generalises.

Probabilistic and Bayesian models

Prophet, Bayesian structural time-series, Gaussian processes, and hierarchical Bayesian models — where uncertainty quantification and external-regressor flexibility are the deciding criteria.

Hybrid and ensemble stacks

Classical baselines blended with ML residual models; ensemble stacking across foundation, gradient-boosted, and classical models; reconciliation layers that enforce coherence across hierarchy levels. Production systems are almost always ensembles.

Non-stationarity

The process generating the data shifts — COVID, regime change, product launches, policy changes, supply-chain disruptions. Models must detect the break and adapt to it without discarding everything that came before.

Hierarchy and reconciliation

A forecast at SKU level must sum coherently to category, region, and total. Naively forecasting each level independently produces contradictions. Reconciliation methods — top-down, bottom-up, optimal reconciliation — are first-class engineering concerns.

Intermittent and sparse series

Long-tail SKUs, low-volume products, and new items break the assumptions of most continuous-series methods. Croston variants, intermittent-demand models, and hierarchical pooling address these directly.

Exogenous signals and calendar effects

Promotions, holidays, weather, macroeconomic indicators, upstream decisions — the signal outside the series is often more predictive than the signal inside it. Feature engineering and exogenous-regressor handling are central.

Evaluation that reflects the decision

MAPE is not the right metric for a staffing decision. Pinball loss, CRPS, quantile calibration, and decision-aware losses tie the evaluation to the decision the forecast serves.

Backtest integrity

Walk-forward validation, expanding and rolling windows, and strict separation of training and holdout periods — because the most common way to ship a bad forecasting system is to leak information from the future into the training set.

Forecasting under
business constraints.

A forecast that is mathematically optimal but operationally unusable is a failed forecast. Mintaka systems are engineered around the constraints of the business that consumes them.

Horizon matters — a one-day operational forecast, a thirteen-week planning forecast, and a five-year strategic forecast are three different systems with three different evaluation frames. Granularity matters — SKU-location-day, SKU-region-week, and category-month are three different problems with three different optimal models. Reconciliation matters — the numbers the S&OP meeting consumes must sum to the numbers the CFO sees. Latency matters — a forecast that arrives after the replenishment run has already executed is a forecast that has no value. Refresh cadence matters — daily, hourly, real-time, or event-triggered, depending on the downstream decision.

Every Mintaka forecasting system is designed backwards from the decision it serves. The model is the middle of the engineering, not the beginning.

Anomaly detection, change points,
and probabilistic outputs.

Not every question is what next?. Many are what just changed?. Mintaka builds anomaly and change-point detection systems on telemetry, transactional, network, and clinical data — with explicit calibration of the false-positive and false-negative costs, because an alert that nobody acts on is worse than no alert at all.

Streaming anomaly detection

On high-velocity data — telemetry from machinery, transactions on a payment rail, packets on a network — with bounded latency and controllable false-positive rates.

Change-point detection

On slower series — demand patterns, pricing behaviour, customer cohorts — where the interest is the shift in regime rather than the individual outlier.

Probabilistic outputs by default

Every production forecast ships with a predictive interval or a full quantile distribution, because downstream decisions need to know the risk, not just the point estimate.

Decision-aware evaluation

The evaluation metric is chosen to reflect the downstream decision — inventory carrying cost vs. stock-out, fraud loss vs. investigation cost, over-staffing vs. SLA breach. MAPE, WAPE, RMSE, MASE, pinball loss, and CRPS are each deployed where appropriate.

Backtest harnesses

Walk-forward and rolling-origin backtests automated into the training pipeline, with strict separation of training, validation, and holdout periods.

Drift and calibration monitoring

Forecast error, calibration of predictive intervals, and distributional shift on inputs are all monitored continuously. A model whose 90-percent intervals contain 72 percent of actuals is a miscalibrated model, and the business consuming it is making decisions on a broken uncertainty band.

Champion-challenger retraining

New model candidates are evaluated against the incumbent on live-equivalent data and promoted only when they win on the decision-relevant metric — not only on a technical score. Retraining cadence is designed, not defaulted.
